Welcome to Kashiwazaki
 Kashiwazaki city is located in the middle of the Niigata prefecture. It has a long coast along the Japan Sea.
 This region is richly endowed with nature, consisting of maritime plains and inland mountain areas.
 It is about 300 kilometers northwest of Tokyo, and takes about 3 hours via car by the expressway or minimum 2 hours by the JR Joetsu-Shinkansen bullet train.
Ayakomai:
 Nearly 500 years ago, Ayako-no-kata, her husband was a defeated general, Uesugi Fusayoshi, escaped into Kashiwazaki, and performed the “Akakomai” dance in remembrance of him. The Ayakomai is formed from three dances, “Kouta Odori,” “Hayashi Mai,” and “Kyogen.” Of these three, Kouta Odori is the remaining image of the beginnings of the Kabuki dance culture. It is an intangible cultural folk asset of Japan. Every September, a public performance is held at Ukawa, the traditional place of Ayakomai.
Gion Kashiwazaki Festival:

 One of Kashiwazaki’s most colorful summer events starts with 3,000 citizens taking part in a “street dancing procession.” After which, there is the Minato(sea port) Festival where citizens pray for safety and prosperous fishing for the upcoming season. There is also the Taruniwaka Festival. This vibrant festival has many gallant floats that parade through the streets. The festival continues with fireworks being launched over the Japan Sea. Kashiwazaki’s fireworks display is one of the three biggest displays in Niigata. This fireworks show is worth seeing at least once.

 Japan’s four seasons can be distinctively seen all along the Sea of Japan’s Kashiwazaki coast and the mountainous terrain surrounding Kashiwazaki.

  1. Kashiwazaki Seaside:
     Kashiwazaki has many beautiful spots along its 42-kilometer seaside coast, including Sado Yahiko and Yoneyama quasi-national park. Also, there are eight specific beautiful scenic spots called the Yoneyama Fukura Hakkei along this coast from Banjin beach to Yoneyama beach.
  2. Kayabuki-No-Sato (Old Japanese-style Village):
     The village is dotted with Japanese thatched roof styled houses like encircled the rice fields. The Oginoshima-ringed and Kadoide areas have many Japanese-style houses fill with rich traditional atmosphere. You can enjoy seasonally country-style dishes along with mother nature’s beautiful display each season.
  3. Kodomo Shizen Ohkoku (Children’s Theme Park)
     It is a farming community resort for playing, learning, and lodging. In the middle of great nature, there are various nature experience programs involving family, canoeing, camping, Japanese-style barbecue, skiing, etc.
  4. Kaze-no-oka Collection Village:
    • Chigo-no-ya (Toy Collection)
       This toy collection is based on ancient Japanese heritage. It has traditional Kokeshi, papier-mache, clay dolls etc. The collector was Shoji Iwashita who also owns a local grocery store in Kashiwazaki.
    • Kurofune-kan(Black Ship Museum)
       The collector, Shotaro Yoshida, was affected by Yukichi Fukuzawa’s enlightenment. Old newspapers are exhibited on folkways and life in the age of arrival of Black ships and Cultural enlightenment to Japan.
    • Ai Mingei-kan(Indigo Folk Craft Collection):
       Masahide Matsuda’s collection. It’s his theory that Beautiful things should be handed down even though it’s trashy. You can see various beautiful indigo dyeing.
  5. Beautiful Sunset:
     Nishiyama’s ocean sunset, along the Japan sea sunset line, is said to be the biggest in the world when climatic conditions are favorable.
  6. Yuugi (Play Area):
     This is an auto-camping site. Here you can try your hand at making ceramics, wood/bamboo articles, food-processed foods, making charcoal.
  7. Nishiyama Furusato Koen (Nishiyama Chinese culture center):
     This facility has information about Nishiyama sightseeing and culture, Chinese traditional architecture “Saiyuu-kan,” a Chinese-style garden “Saiyu-en”. This is the center of our friendship with Jiangsudistrict, Huain city, Chuzhou province, China. And nearby is the Kakuei Tanaka Memorial Museum.
  8. Ohsaki Yukiwariso-no-sato Hot Spring:
     This large field is filled with full-bloomed gorgeous Hepatica flowers (Yukiwariso) during March and April. Adjacent to this field, there is a hot spring for a leisure soak. This hot spring includes natural minerals that help neuralgia, sore joints and muscle aches.
  9. Jon-Nobi Village:
     “Jon-Nobi” is a Japanese dialect, which means feeling relaxed and comfortable. This village has a hot spring, lodging facilities, restaurant and a local souvenir and vegetable store. There are also cottage-style “farmhouses” for rent.
  10. Akasakayama Park:
     The park is great for strolls and there is a stream inside it. In spring, this park is adorned with hanging lanterns for evening time viewing. This park is also known for its elegant cherry blossoms, which are lit up at night.
  11. Kimura Tea Ceremony Art Museum, Shoun-Sanso:
     Visitors can experience the traditional tea ceremony using some of the tea bowls that were made during the Momoyama/Edo periods, Korea’s Rhee dynasty era, and China’s Min/Shin dynasty era. Autumn leaves are lit to produce an eye-inspiring atmosphere.
  12. Kashiwazaki Yumenomori Park
     This environmentally friendly park is aiming to create and restore fields. The environment school in the park is designed to let people experience Kashiwazaki natural resources; sea, mountains, rivers and fields, through various activities. One can also learn about the environment and energy
  • (Spring) Enma-ichi Festival
     It is a proud traditional event with a history of more than 200 years.
    Every June 14-16, about 600 street stalls cover several kilometers centering around Enma-do.
  • (Summer)
     Kashiwazaki’s 42km seaside line has 15 bathing resorts. You can enjoy various beach, capes, and rocky stretch, sandy shores etc.
  • (Autumn) The Fox Night Festival
     It is held at Tochigahara and Urushijima Area in Kashiwazaki. It is a festival that dwells on the fox’s particular fancies, such as dancing, a masked lantern parade, and deep-fried bean curd the size of a tatami mat. The festival was born out of the folk tale called “Tohgoro-gitsune”.
  • (Winter) Stopover for swans
     Every year when winter comes, swans come as messengers from the north to Lake Nagamine. As fitting place for photography, many photographers visit it.
Local Specialties
  1. Sake- Kashiwazaki’s famous brand sake is made from high-quality sake rice and cool clear water.

  2. Confectioneries- They are simple and mild yet delicious and fresh. They are popular by visitors and make perfect souvenirs and gifts.

  3. Pickles- This vegetable is pickled in a high quality miso. These pickles are the standard of excellence.

  4. Processed Marine products-It has each flavor, which is also reputed by visitors to Kashiwazaki.

  5. The Art of Okubo Casting (Copperware)- The flames print make this craft unique. It is recognized as one of Niigata prefecture’s intangible cultural asset
